Apple Butter

Apple butter is not a butter at all, but a very smooth apple sauce! It can be enjoyed on toast, as an apple cake filling, stirred into plain yogurt, on vanilla ice cream, in porridge, glaze for pork - the list goes on!

This recipe makes about 3x500ml jars. Make sure to put into sterilised jars. This can be done by washing the jars in warm, soapy water and place straight onto an oven tray upside down (without drying). Place into a preheated oven at 180c for 15 mins, pour in the hot chutney mixture whilst the jars are still hot and screw on lid. Once cooled put in the fridge.

Ingredients

  • 1.5kg apples, peeled, cored and chopped

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/2 light brown sugar

  • 1 tbsp cinnamon

  • 1 tsp grated nutmeg

  • 1 tsp mixed spice

Directions

  1. Place all the ingredients into the slow cooker and cook on low for 8 hours, stirring occasionally

  2. Cook for 2 hours on low with the lid off

  3. Stir the mixture (which should be falling apart) and then blitz with an immersion blender

  4. Pour into sterilised jars
